Aart van den IJSSEL (The Hague 1922 - Voorburg 1983)

Van den IJssel was a Dutch sculptor, painter, goldsmith and draftsman. He received his art education at the Free Academy of Visual Arts Psychopolis and the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. His teachers were Livinus van de Bundt, Henk Meijer, Theo van der Nahmer and Rudi Rooijackers. From 1954 he was a sculptor based in Voorburg and worked as a teacher at the Free Academy. He was a teacher of Ernst Buter, among others. Aart van den IJssel was married to the German-Dutch painter and textile artist Ruth Salinger (1924-1976). From this marriage was born his daughter Maeyken van den IJssel (1958), who, like her parents, works as a visual artist/painter. Aart van den IJssel is known for his images of animals (especially insects and birds), riders and horses. His work can be found in public space in The Hague, Voorburg and elsewhere in the Netherlands. Van den IJssel was successively a member of the Haagse Kunstkring, Pulchri Studio and the Hague artist groups Verve, Fugare and the Posthoorngroep and is therefore considered part of the New Hague School . During the 1950s he was a member of the artistic working group De Nieuwe Ploeg in Voorburg and organized avant-garde exhibitions of non-figurative sculpture with Rooijackers and Jan Snoeck. In 1961 he was awarded the Jacob Maris Prize for Drawing, in 1971 the Jacob Hartog Prize. In 2004 a triennial art prize of the Municipality of Leidschendam-Voorburg was named after him because of his major contribution to the development of the visual arts from 1950 onwards. His last exhibition was in Pulchri in 1982. At the same time as the opening of this exhibition, a biography was published. about Van den IJssel in the series 'Het Haags Palet', written by Saskia Gras. Aart van den IJssel passed away in 1983.
