Arie van der BOON (1886-1961)Son of the clerk of the court in Zutphen. Running away from home at the age of fifteen, he was apprenticed to a decorative painter in Rotterdam. In 1903 he took painting lessons at the Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague. Van der Boon settled in Drenthe with Rolde in 1915 and earned his living by painting heath landscapes and giving drawing lessons, among others to the young Willem Sandberg, who later became director of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. In 1926 he married Henri_tte Elise Gratama, daughter of the director of the Provinciale Drentsche and Asser Courant. During the many journeys they made, Van der Boon concentrated on drawing with wax crayons in a light color of panoramic (primal) landscapes and historic cities. In 1930 he was a member of the Amsterdam Artists Association Sint Lucas, in 1946 affiliated with De Drentsche Schilders and in 1955 a member of the Drents Schildersgenootschap.
