Bettina Lopetro was educated at the Slade School of Fine Arts, London.
She lives and works in Rotterdam and London.
Lopetro creates a calligraphically inspired image with a steady hand. She translates the primary image symbolism of ancient cultures into contemporary images. In her early work, Lopetro uses bright, almost fluorescent colours. Her work is given a signal function; as with the mass media, it is impossible to avoid the image, it is direct and confrontational. It is a parody of the communication of the present, restless and infinite, without a clear point of focus, a multitude of information. Ships sail across raging seas without a clear course, a picnic basket disappears in a wave of violence, abstract shapes crisscross the image in all directions; it is an abstracted representation of the ordered chaos of our time.
