He lives and works in Utrecht
In the work of Carel Blotkamp texts are often the starting point, in addition, the history of modern visual art has been a theme of Blotkamp for years. Carel Blotkamp himself is very well aware of that history; for many years he was professor of modern art at the Free University in Amsterdam. Recent work by Blotkamp refers to Henri Matisse, Kazimir Malevich and Barnett Newman. Carel Blotkamp also entered into a confrontation with Piet Mondriaan in his first solo exhibition in 1976.
