Chris BEEKMAN (The Hague 1887 - Blaricum 1964)
Chris Beekman was a Dutch painter and draftsman who was politically active. What is not very well known is that he was a member of the De Stijl artists' movement. Beekman followed an evening course at the Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague and worked during the day at a pottery factory. He started with abstract painting with geometric shapes and colors that were used at De Stijl. He was politically active early on and befriended socialist and anarchist, radical artists. This also influenced his work, which became increasingly politically colored. In 1919 Beekman turned away from De Stijl due to a conflict with Theo van Doesburg and later also started painting more figuratively, as this was more popular within socialist circles. From then on he painted many workers, as did Russian socialist artists. Works by Beekman can be seen in the Singer Museum in Laren and the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague, among others.
