Dick ZWIER (IJmuiden 1915 - Amsterdam 1993)
Zwier started his education at the age of 18 at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. Here he first studied free painting with Hendrik Jan Wolter and then monumental art with Heinrich Campendonk, who was a member of the expressionist artists' group ?Der Blaue Reiter?. The influence of Campendonck on the further development of Dick Zwier has been undeniable. Dick Zwier was a member of the Amsterdam Realists group. In 1952 Dick Zwier became a member of the Association of Practitioners of the Monumental Arts, which was founded in that year. Dick Zwier's work, consisting of paintings, watercolors, drawings and murals, shows a preference for motifs that lent themselves well to a geometrically structured composition. He took inspiration from themes from the ports of his birthplace (trawlers, jetties, masts and cranes, dry docks and buildings. Especially in his later period he harks back to his paintings of roofs. Now, however, he isolates the roofs with their pointed corners completely and reduces them to geometric shapes. His work can be found in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, among other places.
