Herman GOUWE (Alkmaar 1875 - Papeete 1965)
Between 1908 and 1927 Herman Gouwe, a study friend of the Maastricht artist Rob Graafland at the Amsterdam State Academy of Art, always spent half of the year in South Limburg. He spent the other half of the year in Amsterdam, later in Blaricum and sometimes abroad, in Paris, in Tangier. In these years, Gouwe rented a studio and a room in Gulpen or in Eben Eymael, just across the border in Belgium, from early summer to late autumn and sometimes even the beginning of winter, and spent many evenings with his Limburg colleagues. artists and friends to the Vrijthof, in the Suisse , the meeting place of the members of the Limburg Art Circle and later of 'the gang of the Suisse'. During a large part of this period (from 1911 to 1920), Gouwe maintained a lively correspondence with collector PA Regnault, who in these years had high expectations of the artist, with whom he started his initially still cautious development in the direction of modern art. After 1920 the correspondence ended abruptly, only to blossom cautiously in the 1930s and in full force in the 1940s.
