Hugo KAAGMAN (Haarlem 1955)

Hugo Kaagman studied Human Geography at the University of Amsterdam from 1973 to 1976. At the end of the seventies he was part of a creative group within the Amsterdam punk and squatters' movement. He was with girlfriend Diana Ozon and graffiti artist Dr. Rat one of the founders of the fanzine de Koekrant and the punk club DDT666. The squats in the Sarphatistraat where Hugo lived were painted by him in a zebra motif and have since been known as the Zebrapanden. Kaagman was active as a graffiti artist in the late 1970s and also in the early 1980s. At the time, he sprayed his own version of Vermeer's Milkmaid on the walls of the Rijksmuseum.

In 1983 he received his first official assignment from the municipality of Amsterdam: making a graffiti artwork on a wall at the temporary Waterlooplein market. Several trips to Morocco and Senegal influenced his work and oriental decorative patterns appeared in his work. He managed to creatively mix this with Old Dutch craft art and then made passionate use of Delft Blue, which he somewhat mockingly called “Shocking Blue”.

In 1993 he received a large order from Schiphol Airport to paint a 65 meter long wall. Numerous other major commissions followed, such as making a mural for the new Dutch consulate in Saint Petersburg (in 1998). He also made designs for 19 aircraft for British Airways. Among the most important commissions in recent years are the murals in the new-build project De Meridiaan in Almere from 2005 and the Stadshaard in Enschede, voted the ugliest building in the Netherlands by the NRC.

Kaagman's work is a mixture of the Western, the non-Western, the bourgeois, the artisanal and the modern, avant-garde, mocking and critical, while at the same time respecting the artistic aspect of the artisanal work.
