Ineke SMITS (1960) graduated in 1984 as a photographer and video artist at the Rotterdam Art Academy. She then obtained a master's degree in film directing and scriptwriting from the National Film and Television School in England. She collaborated with Dutch writer Arthur Japin on a few short fiction films; their first feature film, Magonia (2001), was awarded Best Film at the Bogotá Film Festival and competed at IFFR, San Sebastian, Toronto, Karlovy Vary and many other festivals around the world. Ineke Smits did part of her filmmaking training in Poland and lived and worked in Georgia for many years. She is strongly influenced by Eastern European cinema and by the emphasis on the image artists from Eastern Europe place in their work.
