The special landscape of the Zaan region has fascinated Jan Groenhart (1952) from an early age and challenged him to paint. Attracted to the unknown of the painting world, he attended the Rietveld Academy. There he learned to give meaning to color and to be free in form and style. The baggage he was given enabled him to shape his thoughts.
The developments are clearly visible in the oeuvre of Jan Groenhart. He painted landscapes and still lifes inspired by the work of artists he admired, including Paul Cezanne (1839-1906) and Kees Verwey (1900-1995). He experimented with material and style. From watercolor to oil paint, exuberant or modest. He discovered that watercolor painting offered him the most opportunities to represent light and space. By achieving a certain perfection in this painting technique, he felt the need for new challenges.
He traveled to colorful South America. Everything is different there. Man and his environment are central to the work he made during this period. The colors and the use of acrylic paint are striking. After being away for a year, the artist is trying to find his way again in the vast Zaanse polder landscape. His life experiences, experiences with technology and his feelings have proven to be essential for the work he now makes. Jan Groenhart has his studio in a warehouse between the old factories of Wormer. There he has the opportunity to develop further and to continue his quest for simplicity in form and colour.
