Jean DUBUFFET (Le Havre 1901 - Paris 1985)
Dubuffet attended art school in his hometown of Le Havre and went to Paris in 1918. In 1944 and 1946 exhibitions of his new work took place in Paris. In 1947 his paintings were also on display in New York. Jean Dubuffet painted in a wild style and did not just use paint. He also incorporated asphalt and broken glass in his paintings. Jean Dubuffet had a great interest in drawings of children, the mentally handicapped and prisoners. He built up a large collection of these. He called this art Art Brut. Later on, the work of Dubuffet and that of his followers was referred to by this term. At the beginning of the 1950s, an important series of figures emerged under the heading Corps de Dames. Later, Jean Dubuffet also painted landscapes and cityscapes. Much attention from the press went to the brutal nature of these paintings. Dubuffet's rebellious humor received too little attention. In the mid-1950s, the "Tableaux d'Assemblages" series was created, in which he cut structured and colored canvases into pieces and then glued them back together as a mosaic. At the beginning of the 1960s, both in Paris major retrospective exhibitions of Jean Dubuffet take place in New York. Later, his work also received attention in Amsterdam and London. In the 1960s, Jean Dubuffet started working with plastics, making his work even more three-dimensional. Both paintings with relief and free-standing objects were created. Commissions for large public objects and theater sets soon followed. At the end of his life, Dubuffet published several books on Art Brut and his own art.
