Jörg Remé (1941)

Artist

Jörg REME (Danzig 1941)

Painter, Graphic artist

Education:

Study at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Nuremberg and the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. Also Accademia di belli Arti in Florence and Lecturer at the Royal Academy of Art and Design in 's-Hertogenbosch

He lives and works in Amsterdam and Venice

As with his Renaissance examples, Remé's paintings are characterized by a particularly clear division of the surface. Sharply delineated shapes and figures together form the dream world created by him. Color always plays an important role in this. In terms of content, the paintings and lithographs are a reflection of the constantly renewing artist. In the early period of the Remian figure, for example, he experimented with elements from bathrooms. Taps, water, wells, these are age-old symbols for purification, rebirth, in this case perhaps the rebirth of the painter himself. A Janus head emerging symbolizes the guarding of the new and the old. And this too can be traced back to Remé. A number of times in the past decades Remé deviated from his old trusted line. For example, in the seventies - he wonders whether he is doing it all right - he makes a short trip to the painting of Wilde Painting. And when around 1990 he started to feel that he was working too controlled and planning too much, he decided to choose another material: pastel. Remé: "Working with pastels is closer to drawing, while you can achieve the same deep colors with it as with oil paint." He initially uses warm colors, especially red. Later, calmer tones creep into his work from this period. The pastels indeed have a more spontaneous appearance than the oil paintings of earlier date. At times they even seem sketchy, without losing any of their power

Exhibitions and prizes:

Museum Boymans-van Beuningen, Rotterdam Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam Municipal Museum, Arnhem Museum of Modern Art, Strassburg
