Education:
Joseph Cals obtained his MO drawing at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. From 1982 Cals teaches at this academy and from 1987 to 1988 he teaches drawing/painting at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam.
Cals lives and works in Amsterdam, but in recent years also in Nederweert and Maaseik in Belgium.
Cals grew up in Limburg and has seen many archaeological excavations there, these impressions from prehistoric times are a constant inspiration for his work. Just as the journey Joseph Cals made to the US and living in Amsterdam is a great source of inspiration for the artist.
He builds up his paintings layer upon layer and the archetypes are central to his sculptures. Artist Cals is able to create a beautiful connection between past and present. The subjects that Cals likes to work on are figure representations, nature and abstract forms.
