Klaas Boonstra (1905-1999)

Artist

Klaas BOONSTRA (Krommenie 1905 - Schore 1999)

Painter, draftsman

Education: Klaas BOONSTRA was already involved in painting and drawing at a young age. However, Boonstra earned his living as a coal porter until the age of 26. After a local factory director noticed the drawings of villagers he made in his spare time, his financial support made it possible to study at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. Klaas Boonstra was taught here by the painter JH Jurres and professor of Monumental Art, Heinrich Campendonck Klaas Boonstra lived and worked for many years in Amsterdam, The Hague and Schore (Zeeland) in addition to Krommenie.

After being active in the resistance during the occupation and going into hiding, Boonstra came into contact with many modern expressions of art in Amsterdam in the years after the war. Style influences from Parisian contemporaries such as Matisse and especially Picasso can be found in Klaas Boonstra's work in his expressive figure compositions and deformations painted with bright colours. Despite the contacts that Boonstra had with Experimentals such as Appel, Brand, Constant and Wolvencamp, he remained focused on himself in his way of working and living and, in his own words, felt 'little need to join anything'. He was, however, part of the exhibition associations Stuwing and De Keerkring. Later on, Boonstra became a member of the Creatie group, followed by Groep 54 and Liga Nieuw Beelden. The style of Klaas Boonstra's work, which can be placed in the tradition of the modern classics, is unpredictable, alternately figurative and abstract, characterized by a high degree of spontaneity. According to Boonstra, his compositions of 'free forms' - a dynamic interplay of fantasy forms in fresh colors - are mainly based on intuition, while working. Klaas Boonstra was still at an advanced age painting daily in the remote village of Schore, where he and his wife led a secluded life. His work has been exhibited in group and solo exhibitions in Amsterdam, Zaandam and Hilversum, among others.
