Machiel Brandenburg (1907-1984)

Machiel Brandenburg (1907-1984)

Artist

The painter Machiel BRANDENBURG was born in 1907 in Rotterdam, where he attended the academy. His early work shows affinities with the New Realism and for some years he was a member of the Amsterdam painters' association De Brug, in which these realists were united. In 1948 Brandenburg was commissioned by Queen Wilhelmina to make a painting of Princess Margriet's toys as a birthday present. This painting was so popular that a friendship developed. The artist may have gifted this painting to the Queen. Later on, he also sent the princess regular work. Seven of his paintings are kept in Paleis Het Loo.
