Marinus Boezem (1934)

Artist

Marinus BOEZEM (Leerdam 1934)

Conceptual artist, sculptor, painter, graphic artist.

Education:

Marinus Boezem was educated at the Artibus Academy in Utrecht and the Free Academy in The Hague, each of which he attended for a year.

Marinus Boezem is one of the first Dutch conceptual artists and has been very influential for Dutch visual arts. He has been making conceptual art since the 1960s in which public space plays an important role. Themes in Boezem's work are air, weather, wind, light and movement; these appear in his conceptual art as well as in his later sculptures. Landscapes have also been important since the beginning of his artistry; for example, in 1960 he exhibited a piece of polder as ready-made. In the 1980s and 1990s, landscapes became more important in Boezem's art and his work can be regarded as land art. An example of this is De Groene Cathedral, where 174 poplars were planted in the shape of a Gothic cathedral. From the 1990s onwards, Boezem started making video works in addition to art in public space.

Exhibitions and prizes:

Marinus Boezem's work has been exhibited in leading museums such as the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, where his work was already represented in the famous 1969 exhibition 'On loose screws'. His work was also part of the famous 'When attitudes become form' exhibition in that same year in Bern. Since then, Boezem has had several solo exhibitions. His work is included in the most important Dutch museums and in the New York Museum of Modern Art.
