Maurice Haccuria (1919-1991)

Maurice Haccuria (1919-1991)

Artist

Maurice Haccuria (1919-1991) was a self-taught artist. He studied at the Provincial Normal School of Tienen. In 1945, after the liberation, he moved to Aarschot, where he became a painting teacher at the Municipal Academy in the early 1950s. In 1962 he settled in Brussels. In the early 1970s he came back to Aarschot. In 1974 he left education, he gave evening classes at least until 1978 at the Municipal Academy of Aarschot and moved to Leuven in 87. In his early period (around 1935), he made oil paintings with landscapes and still lifes. In 1937 a drawing of him was on display at the world exhibition in Paris. In 1943 he took part in a first group exhibition ?Art Jeune? in Het Atelier in Brussels and this with figurative landscapes. However, he no longer found satisfaction in the purely figurative and after his move to Aarschot in 1945 he broke with the past. He came under the influence of Fauvism, Expressionism and Cubism of artists such as Jean Brusselmans, Gustaaf De Smet and others. Maurice Haccuria experimented and came up with his own form of constructive cubism. From 1958, lyrical abstraction appeared in his works: the image was no longer important, but the works showed the artist's inner self, his emotions and desires, the explosion of the inner energy, etc. At the end of the 1950s he also made the first metal structures and sculptures. He also made bronzes, engravings, serigraphs, stained glass windows, marble and bluestone sculptures, slate reliefs and huge wooden statues. He also illustrated several books with linocuts and engravings. In 1971 an art folder was published by "Het Handelaarsverbond" of Leuven with works by 10 artists, including Haccuria. In 1943 he took part in a first group exhibition in Brussels and in 1946 a first individual exhibition took place in Sint-Truiden. Among the latest exhibitions we mention 1987 in Paris, 1990 Masereel Center in Kasterlee, 1991 Gallery Embryo in Leuven, 1995 retrospective in Cultural Center in Hasselt and 1997 exhibition in the CC "Het Gasthuis" in Aarschot. He was a member of the "Nouvelle Ecole Europ_enne", "L?Institut International des Arts et Lettres", and the "Belgian Council for Plastic Arts". He received several awards including in the competition "La Jeune Peinture Belge" in '57 and '58, mention in the " Talensprijs" in Brussels in '59, "Prix de l'art abstrait" in Lausanne in '61, mention Europalia prize for painting in Ostend in '62, prize of the Belgian Art Critics Charleroi in '62, Olivetti Prize for Sculpture in '63 and ' 65 in Brussels, laureate of the "Hembecca" prize for graphic art in Brussels in '73 and medal at the international competition in Seoul (South Korea) in '85. His work can be found in Middelheim Museum Antwerp, SMAK in Ghent , Print room t in Brussels and Antwerp, etc.
