Nicolaas BRUIJNESTEIJN van Coppenraet was born in Nieuwer Amstel on 24-3-1893. His home and residence came to Amsterdam as a result of a municipal reorganization in 1896. Nico attended the Quellinus Kunstnijverheids school in Amsterdam from 1908 to 1911. A story is known, which shows that around 1911, probably in connection with his school exams, a well-attended exhibition of his work took place in the parental home. In 1914 the parental family moved to The Hague. Nico, however, only followed them in 1917. In the meantime, he continued to live in the old house in Amsterdam, together with his eldest brother and his friend, the painter EJLigtelijn. He attended the Academy of Fine Arts (probably ca. 1917-1919) in the Hague, where he also met his future wife. He was also a writer in The Hague for some time at the Postcheque- en Girodienst (later Postbank) founded in 1919 and he also gave drawing and violin lessons. Before his marriage he called himself a draftsman, so we can assume that drawings are the main component of his work. made up.
