Otto Piene (Bad Laasphe, April 18, 1928) is a German artist who founded the German group 'Zero' in 1957 together with Heinz Mack in Düsseldorf. Piene initially studied philosophy in Munich and in Düsseldorf, where he would later also teach at the Art Academy . He made Raster-bilde in a kind of stencil technique, and smoke and fire images in which he had smoke and soot deposited on sheets of paper or scorched on the linen. After 1960 he also worked with laser light, hot air balloons and air ballets. In 1962 he set up a 'light salon' together with Heinz Mack and G_nther Uecker for the exhibition 'Nul' in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. The Dutch Zero group also took part: Henk Peeters, Armando and Jan Schoonhoven. Piene sought to realize ever stronger and larger-scale art in space - in mega art projects - and as such can be regarded as a forerunner of the 'happening'.
