Paul van der Ven (1892-1972). The work of Paul van der Ven gained strength over the years and bore the stamp of highly developed competence. His earliest canvases were astonishingly worked through and fine in every detail. The accurate treatment of certain details underlined his intense attention to the object to be painted.
If in his early work he was sometimes too forced to go into non-functional details, later he was able to work more punctually on this point and his brush became looser. His early work had the static beauty inherent in very far-reaching academic perfectionism. These works are painted with a finely pointed brush, are solid in color and show a certain contrast effect in the color scheme. Yet his coloration was clear and harmonious.
Later work shows a free, more impressionistic touch. Unhampered by problems of a technical nature, he achieved greater pictorial freedom, without, however, losing much of his detail. His work gained in intensity and vibrancy over time.
In the Free People of September 6, 1967, the art critic Jan P. Koenraads wrote; Paul van der Ven is a skilled and sensitive artist and although his work also works spatially, it is still desirable to view this serious art ?hands-on, as it were? to fully appreciate and enjoy it.
