Pieter Alewijns mainly works with etching technique in combination with screen printing. He is impressed by the 19th century engravings and the Pre-Raphaelite painting. The romantic slant of his work is not limited to his conception of art or his attitude as an artist, but rather is an extension of his character and personality. The large prints of this 'pur sang' romantic, printed in etching and screen printing, depict personal allegories in which traditional symbols, such as the swan, are transformed into mysterious figures. He has also mapped all animal species forgotten by Darwin, whereby various external characteristics of animals metamorphosed into hybrid creatures. The allegorical representation of angels, mythological figures and fantasy-born half-beings are brought to literary life by the prose and poetry written in pencil. The love poem, one of the mirrors of the mind, turns out not only to be an inexhaustible source, but also the occasion for a perfect symbiosis between a love sonnet and allegory.
