Biography
Lives and works in Amsterdam and London.
The striking works of the contemporary Dutch/Moroccan artist Rachid Ben Ali splash from the canvas. His handwriting is raw, direct and intense. The works of art tell about confrontational themes such as racism, homosexuality, immigration, war and intolerance. Personal frustrations and feelings are central. The work also often contains references to sex. Ben Ali sees sexuality as a powerful source of creativity and energy. In an art historical context, his art is similar to the work of American artist Jean Michel Basquiat, just as expressive, powerful, socially critical and influenced by both street art and comics.
In the year 2000, the work of Rachid Ben Ali was selected by Queen Beatrix for an exhibition curated by her at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
