WILLEM CLAASSEN (Amsterdam 1940)
Received the Uriot Prize during his classical education at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. Afterwards he went his own way and mainly painted religious and Biblical subjects in a free, imaginative view with the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth as the main theme. He gradually also made abstract paintings in oil paint, acrylic or oil pastel.
Major exhibitions such as the Mozes & Aaronkerk and the Sint-Lucasziekenhuis in Amsterdam, the Benedictus Abbey in Achel and the Sint-Nicolaaskerk in Amsterdam mainly showed the religious aspects of his work. Husband of the Netherlands' most sought-after portrait painter Mieke Dillo.
In addition to his studio work, he was intensively involved in social advocacy for visual artists.
