Willem Roelofs (1822-1897)

Willem Roelofs was one of the forerunners of the Dutch renewal in painting. There was a transition from Romantic Classicism to the Hague School. In addition to training at the Hague Academy, Roelofs was also a student of Hendrikus van de Sande Bakhuyzen. He was not only a painter, but also an etcher and lithographer. Roelofs stayed in Barbizon a number of times, where he also came under the influence of the Barbizon School. This is reflected in his landscapes, on which he painted high clouds and moody water features. In 1847 he was involved in the establishment of the Hague artists' society Pulchri Studio at the home of Jan Hardenberg, together with Johan Hendrik Weissenbruch, Jan Weissenbruch, Jan Frederik van Deventer, Willem Antonie van Deventer, Jacob Jan van der Maaten, FH Michaël, BJ van Hove and Johannes Bosboom.
