    Information about the artist:
Andreas (André) Theodorus van der Vossen , born 26-02-1893 in Haarlem and died 17-05-1963 in Bloemendaal, watercolorist, sculptor, collagist, graphic designer, illustrator, painter, draftsman, typographer, manufacturer of woodcuts and manufacturer of gouaches.
Education: School for Architecture, Decorative Arts and Crafts in Haarlem (1915-1917). Here he followed a course in woodcut technique, among other things, and here he received his training as a designer.
André van der Vossen started his career in 1917 as a graphic artist, employed by the firm of Joh. Enschede and Zn. in Haarlem. In 1920 he participated in the competition to renew the Dutch postage stamp. He won and designed many series of stamps for the PTT, including children's stamps and the 'Watersnood stamp' in 1953. He also designed stamps for Germany, Dutch New Guinea, Curaçao, the Netherlands Antilles and Suriname.
From 1929 André van der Vossen also started painting. At first he worked figuratively, but after 1947 his work became more abstract and characterized by great diversity, not only in terms of style, but also in terms of the techniques used. His abstract styles were strict geometric, abstract expressionist and lyrical abstract.
In 1949 he was invited to the “Salon des Réalités Nouvelles” in Paris, an association of artists and an art exhibition with an emphasis on abstract art. He participated in this Salon until 1956.
In 1953 he was appointed lecturer at the Department of Aestetic Design of the PTT.
After his death in 1963, a memorial exhibition was held in the Huis van Looy museum in Haarlem.
André van der Vossen was a member of the artists' associations Vrij Beelden, Arti et Amicitiae (Arti, Amsterdam) and the Liga Nieuwe Beelden.
