Armando, born as Herman Dirk van Dodeweerd (Amsterdam, September 18, 1929 – Potsdam, July 1, 2018), was a Dutch painter, sculptor, poet, writer, violinist, actor, journalist, film, television and theater maker. Armando was his official name; his birth name, the pseudonym as he called it, no longer existed for him. He himself saw his work as 'Gesamtkunstwerk', for which his experiences from the Second World War in the vicinity of Kamp Amersfoort formed the basis. Armando spent his childhood in Amersfoort. He later studied art history for several years. As a visual artist he was part of the Dutch Informal Group founded in 1958 by Jan Henderikse (among others with Kees van Bohemen, Jan Henderikse, Henk Peeters, Jan Schoonhoven), which in 1960 was absorbed by the Dutch Nul movement. The members of the Nul group brought to their work an entirely new, astonishing vision of familiar things. A typical example: Armando created The black water, a basin made of black plastic, filled with several centimeters of water, but with a great illusion of depth. A common thread running through his prose was the processing of the past by the survivors of the war, especially by the Germans themselves, and the many shades in it that he noticed. As a poet and artist he was also involved with De Nieuwe Stijl and Gard Sivik. In addition to the visual arts and literature, he was also active in journalism, theatre, television, music (as a violinist in the gypsy orchestra of Tata Mirando) and sports (including amateur boxing). For twenty-five years he played with Cherry Duyns and Johnny van Doorn in Herenleed, first in the television series and then in the theater version - absurd, slow-moving scenes from a life with master-servant relationships. Anton de Goede talks about Armando, among others, Credits: Jeroen van Kan From 1979 he lived alternately in Amstelveen and Berlin for over 25 years, where he worked until 1989 in the old studio of the Nazi sculptor Arno Breker. From that time on he lived in Amstelveen, but he had plans to settle in Amersfoort, the city of 'his' museum, the Armando Museum. On October 22, 2007, this museum was completely destroyed by a raging fire, whereby almost the entire collection and part of the documentation archive were lost. Part of the rescued collection was transferred to the new Museum Oud Amelisweerd (MOA) in Bunnik. The first exhibition of this collection in Oud-Amelisweerd was opened on 21 March 2014 by Princess Beatrix. In 2013 his collection of poems Stemmen was published. In November 2015, Uitgeverij Koppernik published 21 new poems under the title Why. In 2017 he performed with I heard that people were listening, accompanied by the Ukrainian accordionist and bandoneonist Oleg Lysenko, in which he recited from his own work. In 2019, a year after his death, Cherry Duyns paid tribute to Armando with the same program. Armando died on July 1, 2018 in the German city of Potsdam. Following his death, Museum Voorlinden has brought forward a retrospective exhibition planned for 2019. This would be in the context of his ninetieth birthday. The exhibition was on view until May 5, 2019. The artwork Der Bogen he designed in the public space of Amstelveen, the largest artwork he ever made for the public space, is still considered controversial. In January 2020, it was announced that it will be moved from Stadsplein to Stadspark. The sculpture would then come into its own better in the green.
