Karel Appel is one of the most famous Dutch artists. In 1948 he was involved in the foundation of the Cobra artist movement, with which he caused a lot of furore. Initially in the Netherlands and later also in the rest of the world, Karel Appel became the figurehead of the Cobra movement. The movement only existed for a short time, but it had an enormous influence on modern art. The term “I mess around” was used in a negative sense by opponents of Appel's expressive style, but it does indicate well how Karel Appel worked. In the 1940s and 1950s, but also long after, Karel Appel's work caused fierce debate. Karel Appel has been very productive and his work has always maintained an excellent market value.
