Kees Verwey maakte in de 20e eeuw naam als kunstschilder, aquarellist en tekenaar. Daarnaast stond hij bekend om zijn koppige, dwarse persoonlijkheid.
Verwey werd geboren in Haarlem, in een familie van schilders, dichters en architecten, en geldt als een ware vertegenwoordiger van de school van de klassieken, maar met een eigen ‘twist’. Zijn thema’s bestaan uit kleur en vorm, bloemen en verval, vrouwen, objecten en materie, allen geschilderd in zijn studio aan het Spaarne onder constant wisselende lichtval en sfeer.
Overduidelijk is dat Verwey tot volle glorie komt in zijn portretten van vrouwen, zijn atelierstukken en bloemaquarellen in immer veranderende kleuren en composities.
