Information about the artist: Willem de Haas Hemken (Rotterdam 16 February 1831 – The Hague 6 March 1911), painter, draftsman and watercolorist. Initially he worked as a civil servant in the Dutch East Indies. He probably only started painting after returning to the Netherlands. He was taught by the artist Piet Schipperus (1840-1929). Willem de Haas Hemken painted and drew town and village views in a fresh and colored palette. From 1889 he became a member of De Nieuwe or Littéraire Sociëteit De Witte. He lived and worked in Rotterdam, Arnhem, Beverwijk, Wiesbaden and The Hague.
