As early as 1844, brothers Huibert and Hendrik Ravesteyn were making hand-painted tiles under their own name. Frederik des Tombe took over the factory in 1908 after Huibert had withdrawn from the business a year earlier. This factory went bankrupt in 1917, but under the leadership of JJJ van Luijn, work with a number of employees was continued around 1920 under the name Faïence- en Tegelfabriek Westraven. In 1963 Westraven became part of De Porceleyne Fles. In 1994, Westraven's own factory was officially closed and physically incorporated into De Porceleyne Fles, where the screening techniques were continued.
Westraven has become a widespread brand due to its large production and can be found almost in many Dutch homes. Designers who have collaborated with the company include Cris Agterberg, Koos van der Sluijs, Joke Stroes and Pieter Köhler.
