In 1826, the Val-Saint-Lambert crystal factory started on the site of the former Cistercian abbey of Saint Lambert in Seraing. The leadership was in the hands of François Kemlin and Auguste Lelièvre. Due to its favorable location near the Maas, a coal-rich environment and the railway, the factory quickly grew into an important center for the Belgian glass industry. In the nineteenth century, the grounds surrounding the abbey were dotted with workers' houses, gardens, a shop, school and hospital.

Val-Saint-Lambert is still internationally known as a producer of glassware. In the eighties the factory was in danger of going bankrupt and part of the shares were taken over by the government. Even today, Val-Saint-Lambert still produces according to traditional methods. The company is purveyor to the Belgian royal family and collaborates with various designers. Characteristic are objects of double colored and cut crystal.
