Willem SANDBERG (Amersfoort 1897 - Amsterdam 1984)
Wall painting by Willem Sandberg on the Waterlooplein metro station Jonkheer Willem Jacob Henri Berend Sandberg was a designer and typographer, from 1945 to 1963 he was director of the Stedelijk Museum (SM) in Amsterdam, for which he had worked since 1938. He was also a graphic designer. He was a member of the Sandberg family. Under Sandberg's leadership, the SM developed into an internationally renowned center for modern art. He was open to the experimentation of the Cobra movement from an early age and, like the Museum of Modern Art in New York, pursued a collection and exhibition policy that also included industrial design, photography and graphic design. The quality provided by the newly established reproduction department became leading in the museum world. Sandberg also designed the museum printing himself (catalogues, posters, invitations), and in this way developed into one of the most important Dutch graphic designers. His design career started in the late 1920s with the production of image statistics. After his retirement, Sandberg remained active as an exhibition maker and designer. He also played an important role in the construction of the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. Sandberg was involved in the famous attack on the Amsterdam population register on March 27, 1943. He was the only one of those involved who managed to escape the Germans in the end. A plaque with the twelve names of the perpetrators of the attack who were shot on 1 July 1943 hangs on the facade of the current Plantagestudio. The plaque was designed by Willem Sandberg. In 1951 Sandberg was awarded the Prize of the Artists Resistance Foundation, partly because of this fact.
