La Relève was a group of young Ghent artists who got to know each other through the Ghent Academy. The name La Relève, 'the redemption', came from the idea that they were the ones to be addressed after the Flemish Expressionists. The idea prevailed within the group that a painting is always an expression of the painter himself. They were inspired by expressionism and cubism.
