André Masson (4 January 1896 Balagny-sur-Thérain - 28 October 1987) was a French painter. He was one of the earliest French surrealists and an important Parisian friend and mentor of the Spanish abstract surrealist Joan Miró. He was in particular an artist of lines.
Lifecycle As an intellectual and philosophical visual artist, he organized many meetings in Paris from 1925 with writers, musicians, visual artists and poets to stimulate their mutual exchange. Initially, he found inspiration in Cubism, but from 1924 he was strongly attracted to Surrealism. He has been intensively, but also very critically, involved with 'automatic writing', the showpiece of the surrealists, which, in his opinion, has indeed freed up his own art. He is known for his many erotic drawings, made using automatic writing. He had to flee from the Nazis to America, where he was inspired by the fantasy world of the Native American culture there.
