*Antje Geertje (Ans) Markus (Halfweg, January 29, 1947) - Dutch painter. Markus is best known for her paintings of women in bandages. Ans Markus grew up in a simple environment. Her father Thomas Markus (1907-1971) was a carpenter; her mother Antje Vermeer (1912) was a housewife, but also did household chores for others to supplement the family income. Ans Markus already excelled in drawing in her early childhood. During her secondary school education at the Laurens Costerlyceum in Haarlem, she became interested in fashion and wanted to become a fashion illustrator.

In 1964 the family moved to Geertruidenberg. As a result, she did not finish her schooling and went to work at the office of the concrete company where her father, Van Baarsen, became manager. Ans' brother, Tom, later became director there. Her parents thought an art education was unnecessary and too expensive. In 1967 Ans became pregnant and married the father of her child. The couple went to live in Tilburg. In 1970 Markus enrolled in an evening course in anatomy drawing and she also started painting. With this limited education, Markus is seen as an autodidact.

The marriage was bad and even traumatic for Ans Markus. Her husband was guilty of domestic violence, which damaged Markus' self-image. Nevertheless, the marriage lasted until 1977. Shortly afterwards she got into a relationship with the painter Jan van den Berg, whom she had met in the Tilburg art circle and with whom she started living together. Around 1985 this relationship also broke down, after which Markus painted one of the few symbolic paintings in which a man appears, entitled Encounter. Only the back of the man can be seen as he climbs a flight of stairs away from the woman.
