Bob Bonies - Without title - Sold

Bob Bonies (1937) can be seen as a successor to the De Stijl movement. In his work he focuses on the question of how far you can go with limiting and reducing without this being at the expense of the tension in the image. Bonies limits himself to visual language and color choice: he only uses the primary colors plus green and white.

In his paintings Bonies uses color to give direction to space: vertically, horizontally and diagonally. He tries to create synergy between the three-dimensionality or structure of his painting and the actual space in which it exists. In this respect, Bonies sees himself as a constructor of space. He mainly works with squares and rectangles. He starts new paintings in his studio and works completely traditionally: linen on a wooden frame.
Bob Bonies was born in The Hague and often visited the Gemeentemuseum there with its large Mondriaan collection. Wherever Bonies lived, the Stijl movement and the oeuvre of Theo van Doesburg and Mondriaan have always remained part of his cultural baggage.
