Chris Buursen was born in Tilburg, studied philosophy at the University of Utrecht from 1971 to 1973 and received his art training at the Artibus Academy of Visual Arts in Utrecht from 1973 to 1978. There he also came into contact with Ger Kleis, who included his work in some of his private press publications of Sub Signo Libelli. Through Kleis, Ben Hosman also met him, who included work in both the publications of his private press Regulierenpers and those of the publishing house Athenaeum - Polak & Van Gennep, of which Hosman was director for several years.
