In Eddie Symkens' ceramic work, man is placed as a molded being in various situations that are not always comfortable and that in a world that does not always give great joy. This work is inextricably linked to the human condition, the human destiny, which can only be experienced through self-knowledge, awareness, insight. An awareness and insights that are sent from within and that, just like with the blind Oedipus, make eyes superfluous, because the world that has to be seen is an inner world. Eddie Symkens tries to design sculptures that are searching and therefore even come across as strange and perhaps transcend the traditional/conservative thinking pattern of the human in the hope that this confrontation will give rise to new lines of thought. On the one hand, the figures radiate an enormous power with their protruding heads and their weighty bodies, on the other hand they overcome a kind of impotence, which makes them so human. Eddie Symkens' work shows the urge to rise above the earth/clay/matter. The self-conscious sculptures in their apparently clumsy bodies, worn with so much dignity, make him more than successful.
