Beautiful work by Frans Room, known for his beautiful representations of Dutch lighthouses.
Signed, dated and numbered by the artist in pencil.
A reconnaissance light has burned on the Tower of Goedereede since 1552. Because this light was no longer visible enough, a lighthouse was built on the Westhoofd between 1911 and 1912, according to a design by BA Verhey. It was the first Dutch lighthouse made of reinforced concrete. The optics of the Goedereede Tower were transferred to this new tower. On May 5, 1945, at the end of the Second World War, the lighthouse was destroyed by the German occupiers with explosives. The optics were secured in time and were later used on the Ameland lighthouse. Two light keeper's houses were built at the same time as the tower. These are still present.
The current 52.3 meter high square tower was built after the Second World War on the location of the old lighthouse according to a design by government architect Gijsbert Friedhoff. It is a concrete skeleton with brick cladding. Iron bars were used that came from the old lighthouse. The light was turned on for the first time in 1950. In 1989, a radar antenna was installed on the tower. The smoke bulb had to make way for this. This was placed on a column in a park in the village of Ouddorp. The tower was restored and repainted in 2018-2019. The shaft of the national monument has been purple-red ever since. The municipal council approved this striking color because it most closely resembles the original 'lighthouse red', which was no longer available. The painting was part of the tower's restoration. In 2007 the lighthouse became a national monument. It is staffed irregularly, is located in a protected area and is not accessible to the public.
