Guillaume Le Roy was born in 1938 in Blaricum and died in Amsterdam in 2008. During his school years, Le Roy lived in Bosch en Duin, where his parents took over the Hoefslag tavern in 1945 and turned it into a restaurant. From 1986 to 1999, Le Roy was a lecturer at the Christian art school in Kampen and from 1990 to 1992 a guest lecturer at the art academy in Den Bosch. According to art critics, Le Roy is “...The unparalleled master of relief printing in forms through which the light seeps, “a king among graphic artists" a true graphic artist, devoted to the technique of the carving knife and corrosive acids. The elemental nature of that technique speaks directly from his work (his development) as a graphic artist there is one towards ever greater austerity and abstinence" Le Roy himself said about his work: "I etch if I want to make things that cannot be done in woodcuts, and vice versa. I have to be able to scratch and bite. I carve from wood and I bite from zinc. A graphic artist simply works very differently from a painter. The painter (and the lithographer) add something: the paint, and the etcher and woodcarver take away something (… He once said to someone about his remarkably limited use of color in recent decades for outsiders: black and white simply have the most colour.
