De in 1952 te Harderwijk geboren slagerszoon blijkt al snel een voorliefde voor tekenen en verzamelen te ontwikkelen. De eerste schetsen en tekeningen vonden hun weg naar overlopen, huis- en slaapkamers van ooms en tantes; jaarlijkse tekenwedstrijden werden gewonnen en deze artistieke ambities leidden begin jaren zeventig uiteindelijk tot een korte studie aan de Reclame School REX aan het Frederiksplein in Amsterdam
