"Intimate with matter, Matchavariani has long explored the ways of the essential. Along the way, he crossed paths with Junichirô Tanizaki in the latter's In Praise of Shadows and discovered a new freedom, one that frees the eye from sharp lines and harsh light around the eye. to give free access to dreams and let the hand the lucidity of deep darkness. The shadow is the layer of our senses. According to Tanizaki, we can appreciate the infinite variety of colors of the moon only when the night sky has a certain darkness. Henri Matchavariani is a renowned art director who has worked for more than fifteen years between France and Italy for the major advertising agencies, earning him a Silver Lion in Cannes in 1974 and a Gold Clio in New York in 1976. He became an illustrator and worked on numerous advertising projects, notably for Air France, and collaborated with numerous magazines (Vogue). His work has been exhibited and seen throughout France. He has also worked closely with Helmut Newton on a project for Cacharel. As a calligrapher, for several years now, he has returned to the source of his talent with a gesture of great simplicity, made of flights and annotations inspired by the East. An exhibition entitled "Henri Matchavariani and Christian Dotremont" is planned soon.
