In 1940, Mees painted the portrait of Mrs. Nijs, owner of - or working in - an antique shop in Nieuwe Spiegelstraat, Amsterdam. She is said to have traded with the German occupier during the war. Hermanus Ellen (Herman) Mees (Veendam, September 19, 1880 – Zuidlaren, November 28, 1964) was a Dutch painter, specialized in portraits. He was a student of, among others, August Allebé and Willem van Konijnenburg. In 1917 Mees accepted a position as a teacher at the Rotterdam Art Academy. Mees then (1924) devoted himself fully to painting. Mees became known for his portraits of, among others, Utrecht professors and Rotterdam businessmen and port barons. In 1924, Mees became head teacher at the Rotterdam Academy. He remained employed there until 1943. He was a member of Pulchri Studio The Hague. From September 20 to October 21, 1951 there was a Herman Mees anniversary exhibition in Museum Boymans. Works by Herman Mees can be found in various Dutch museums, including the Museum Rotterdam, the Drents Museum in Assen, the Letterkundig Museum in The Hague and the Veenkoloniaal Museum in Veendam.
