Mooie "zware" de Vries met pasteuse structuur een "levendig" schilderij. Hubert De Vries was een Belgische kunstenaar geboren te Antwerpen in 1899 en die gestorven is aldaar in 1979.  Hij was een schilder. Bracht een groot deel van zijn jeugd door te Calais. Vanaf 1918 opleiding aan de Academie te Antwerpen o.l.v. Is. Opsomer en J. Creytens. Maakte kennis met Permeke, G. De Smet en A. Servaes en evolueerde al vlug naar expressionistische vormgeving en koesterde ook bewondering voor J. Smits. Realiseerde o.m. marines, figuren, portretten, clowns, religieuze onderwerpen.  De klonterige verfpasta en het mystieke licht waarin sommige werken baden herinneren aan Jakob Smits. Vermeld in BAS I en Twee eeuwen signaturen van Belgische kunstenaars.  (PIRON)
