Early work by Jan Broeze, Signed lr with year 1930.

Egbert Jan Broeze was born on November 29, 1896 on his grandparents' farm in Elsenerbroek, a Markelose hamlet between Enter and Goor. He goes to primary school in Enter and then to the evening agricultural school in Goor, during the day he works on the farm.
He grew up in a Protestant farming environment.
Jan Broeze is a socially minded person and has a Marxist philosophy. He is both a farmer and an (self-taught) artist.

He started drawing at an early age, initially following the example of pictures in his school books. His contact with Mr. and Mrs. Krouwel-Blaauboer, an art-loving couple of teachers, is of great significance for his political, spiritual and artistic development. They stimulate his artistry and introduce him to museums, books and music. During this period he also started watercoloring and painting.

In 1923 Jan Kruijsen (left with hat), a painter of peasant figures, landscapes and Stations of the Cross, stayed in Goor for some time. He becomes Jan Broeze's most important teacher (right) and gets to know him about movements in the visual arts, such as Cubism, of which he becomes very impressed.
In 1923-24 Kruijsen and Broeze spent some time together in Silesia. The social imbalances and the great poverty they are confronted with there make a deep impression on Jan.
This journey will remain a source of inspiration for him until the 1950s.

In 1925-26 Jan Broeze was taught by the portrait painter Jos Beeling from Almelo.
Cubism won't let him go. In 1930 he creates his first work influenced by Cubism. Gradually, he begins to gain some notoriety. In 1933 he takes part in a group exhibition in the Rijksmuseum Twenthe.
Despite visiting museums and exhibitions elsewhere in Europe, he remains very attached to his native region. Jan Broeze becomes a member of the Twentsche Kunstkring, founded in 1934, in which most of the artists working in Twente had united.
Shortly after the war, Broeze was one of the founders of De Nieuwe Groep, a number of artists who conceived the plan during the war to unite 'the moderns' in the east of the country.
Various exhibitions are organized not only in Twente, but also in the Vondelpark Pavilion in Amsterdam (1949) and in the Frans Halsmuseum in Haarlem (1950).

In 1959 Jan Broeze travels to the south of France and Spain together with Karel Schönfeld-Wichers (brother of the writer Belcampo). He makes many sketches and studies, which he later elaborates in oil in his studio in Elsenerbroek.

In 1961 he has his first retrospective at the Rijksmuseum in Enschede.
After 1964 his health went downhill. He develops tuberculosis and is admitted to a sanatorium in Hellendoorn. He also makes a lot of sketches there. Once back home, he continues to draw and paint into old age.
On the occasion of its eightieth birthday, the Rijksmuseum Twenthe organizes its second retrospective in 1976.

Jan Broeze dies on December 5, 1983 at the age of 87 in Delden
