- Decennialang schetst en aquarelleert Montyn op reis al zijn indrukken en verwerkt ze bij thuiskomst in series etsen die hij met groeiend succes exposeert overal ter wereld. Hij ontwikkelt een geheel eigen stijl en kleurenpalet wat hem tot op de dag van vandaag een geliefd en veel verzameld kunstenaar maakt.
Montyn’s werk begon vrij figuratief maar vanaf de jaren zestig stileert hij zijn werk steeds meer naar een eigen abstractere beeldtaal.
Aanvankelijk maakt hij etsen in zwarte inkt, later gebruikt hij steeds meer kleur in zijn werk.
Montyn etst altijd zelf in kleine oplagen en afwisselend in de technieken: droge naald, aquatint en tailledouche.
De steeds in zijn werk terugkerende okertinten symboliseren zijn verbondenheid met de aarde.
Zijn werk is te zien in de grote musea zoals het Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam en het Museum of Modern Art New York (MoMa). Maar ook in de Bibliotheque National de France in Parijs en tal van andere vooraanstaande musea.
Dirk Ayelt Kooiman schreef in 1982 een roman gebaseerd op Montyns leven, getiteld “Montyn”.
Zijn veelbewogen leven en oeuvre is onderwerp van vele publicaties, maar ook films zoals een documentaire van Jan Louter uit 2004: “Jan Montyn: love me or leave me”.
