Jan Toorop made the drawing of the miner during a visit to South Limburg in the first week of June 1915. Together with the chaplain of social works in the mining region, HA Poels, pastor Jan Röselaers van Hoensbroek and state mine director JCF Bunge, he visited the underground company of Staatsmijn Wilhelmina.
A certain Jan Quadackers, a 42-year-old miner from Hoensbroek, was the model for Toorop's crayon or chalk drawing. Quadackers reportedly did not pose in the underground company of a mine, but in the basement of the parsonage in Hoensbroek.
