- The Frisian artist Jelle Hoogstra (1924-2003) began his artist training at the age of eighteen in 1942 at the academy "art-exercise" in Arnhem. Unfortunately, due to the war situation, he was unable to complete his education, but immediately after the liberation he enrolled at the Academy of Visual Arts in Rotterdam and was able to complete his studies there. With great enthusiasm and passion, he made gouaches, pastels and drawings of everything that inspired him, mostly from his own imagination, in his studio until a very old age. Various subjects had Hoogstra's great attention, such as landscapes, cityscapes, the human figure, geishas, animals, still lifes and nature. Although he also painted frequently in France, the Dutch landscape was his great source of inspiration.
