Zijn vader, Jan Jacob Spohler, overleed toen Johannes Franciscus nog maar dertien jaar oud was waardoor hij - anders dan zijn 16 jaar oudere broer Jan Jacob Coenraad - waarschijnlijk geen les van hem heeft gehad. Wellicht is deze afwezigheid van vaderlijke schildersinvloed ook de reden geweest dat Johannes Franciscus een ander genre koos dan zijn vader en broer. Hij legde zich toe op het schilderen van historiserende stads- en dorpsgezichten met figuren in plaats van zomerlandschappen en ijsgezichten. Johannes Franciscus’ oeuvre is geïnspireerd op dat van de grootmeester op dit gebied, Cornelis Springer: straatjes met Oud-Hollandse huizen, bevolkt met publiek van allerlei pluimage, drukdoende met allerhande bezigheden.
