Mooi stilleven van Josef Santen. Josef Santen staat er om bekend dat veel van zijn werken niet gesigneerd zijn, toch is zijn handschrift uit vele te herkennen. Met mooie lijnen/toetsen maakt hij veel schilderijen tot kunstwerken. Dit schilderij is rechtboven gesigneerd.
Zijn werk is te vinden in het FRANS HALSMUSEUM in Haarlem en in diverse particuliere verzamelingen.
Josef Santen woonde en werkte in Amsterdam, daarna in Haarlem. Hij was leerling van de bekende beeldend kunstenaar H.F. Boot.
Santen schilderde vooral figuren en portretten, verder stillevens en landschappen in expressionistisch-naturalistische stijl.
Josef Santen was lid van het Genootschap van beeldende kunstenaars 'Kunst zij ons doel' tezamen met Anton Heyboer, won hij eens de derde prijs van het Willink van Collenfonds
Santen was een zeer productieve schilder, die bijna dagelijks aan nieuwe schilderijen begon, maar veel werk bleef onvoltooid. Het Haarlems Dagblad schreef in een necrologie: 'Santen meester van het onvoltooide'.
Naast kunstschilder was hij verzamelaar en mecenas van zijn toenmalige boezemvriend Anton Heyboer.
